Anchoring Innovation for the World’s Finest Superyachts — Since 1969

From a small workshop in Auckland to the decks of the world’s most prestigious superyachts, Maxwell Marine has spent over 55 years redefining what an anchoring system can be. With a legacy rooted in innovation, craftsmanship, and global reach, we’re proud to reflect on the journey that shaped who we are today.

A global journey

Over fifty five years ago, in Auckland, New Zealand, Graeme Maxwell Cundy founded Maxwell Marine, driven by his experience at the Naval Dockyards and the inventive Kiwi spirit. He began designing and manufacturing sheet winches for New Zealand’s emerging yachting market. What started as a local venture quickly gained momentum and has since evolved into a globally respected brand, renowned for its quality, reliability, and innovation in anchoring solutions.

From its early expansion into the American market in 1978, Maxwell quickly grew into an international player. A pivotal moment came in 1982 with a strategic partnership in Taiwan, giving Maxwell a strong foothold in the Asian marine industry. By the late ’90s and early 2000s, the company had established key offices and operations in Australia, Italy, and the United States, cementing its presence across the globe.

Born from Innovation

Innovation has always been at the heart of Maxwell. In 1992, the company introduced the world’s first automatic rope/chain windlasses, setting a new standard in anchoring technology. This leap forward was supported by the adoption of CAD software and CNC machinery in 1994, which enabled faster R&D cycles and greater precision in manufacturing. By 1995, Maxwell had made the bold decision to focus solely on anchoring solutions, a move that redefined its brand identity and positioned it as a true specialist in the field and trusted globally, privately and commercially, including defense sectors.

The new millennium brought a period of rapid growth. In 2001, Maxwell moved into a purpose-built facility to meet increasing global demand. That same year, the company expanded its capabilities by acquiring local manufacturers Weaver Hatches and Southern Ocean Ropes. These moves broadened the product portfolio and reinforced the company’s engineering strength.

A major turning point came in 2008 when Maxwell joined Dutch leading developer of complete onboard boat systems VETUS and later became part of Yanmar in 2013. These alliances opened new markets and opportunities, particularly in Europe, and accelerated development across Maxwell’s Power, Sail, and Superyacht segments. Notably, the Maxwell team in New Zealand designed and built the largest windlass test rig in the Southern Hemisphere, allowing for advanced in-house testing that meets international classification society standards.

Today, Maxwell continues to serve boat builders and mariners around the world, with its products found on everything from small trailer boats to luxurious superyachts. Over half the Auckland-based staff have been with the company for more than a decade, a testament to the team’s dedication and the brand’s enduring values.
